Meta data management and SOA

SOA Metadata management is a key area in any SOA implementation these. Hence it goes without saying, that effective metadata management strategy should be  in place.

Often we get to hear about role of metadata management in SOA suites.

Metadata management generally appears in the context of Registry -Repository where in you manage the service artifacts, policies etc.

In the BPM context, we can manage the BPEL atrifacts as metadata.

The access to the metadata happens via API,Classes,Wizards.

With this introduction i am planning to explore more about

  • Effective stratagies for metadata mangement, is performance tuning of metadata Needed.
  • Current maturity level(simple/advanced)  of metadata management in the available SOA product suites today.
  • Meta Data security

Anand, Would you want to check out our web-site, we have been doing a lot of work around Master Data and want to incorporate SOA, as soon as we get funding. Feel free to reach me at rishi.bhatnagar@syntelli.com

Thanks,

Yes , It is good to know that SOA Meta data being the important part of SOA Strategy is given due attention.

One of the drivers of SOA is the reusability ,Meta data management can help achieve them if designed effectively.

Another thing which I usually think about is the key words the Ontology, Semantic web, RDF, OWL. Yes definitely these need coverage here to get a background of Meta data management and the important role they play in the discovery phase of the assets managed.

But the SOA suites we have today hide the implementation specifics from us and provide us easy to use wizards or other means of managing the Meta data.

I invite opinions from other readers / vendors as to how much level of understanding that the architect or design user needs to around the Ontology specifics to get the best out of Meta data.

My present understanding is though each of the organizations may have the best practices of Meta data management, the implementation specifics are tightly coupled with the vendor suite capabilities.

I have developed a whitepaper on this topic, it is due for publish in SDA India magazine soon. I shall publish the URL once it is made available online
